The Titanic

The Titanic was built by the White Star Line. The owners of the company thought that if ocean liners were big and luxurious enough more people would travel with them.The Titanic was designed to be the largest in a series of three ships made by the White Star line. It was 268 metres long, 28 metres wide, and weighed 45 000 tons. It produced enough power to travel at a speed of 24 knots (about 40km per hour).The bulk of the ship was pided into compartments. They were separated by steel doors that did not let any water through. The ship could still move and float if 3 or 4 of the 16 compartments were filled with water.

The Titanic was more like a floating hotel than a ship. It cost $7.5 million and it was unlike any other ship that had ever been built. Palm trees and other expensive plants decorated the luxurious hallways and corridors. The ship could carry 2 600 passengers and a crew of 900.

On April 10, 1912 over 2200 passengers boarded the Titanic on its maiden voyage to New York. Many of them were immigrants who saved all their money for the journey. First class passengers had to pay between $2 500 and $4 500 for a private room and a bath, third class passengers had to share rooms and paid $35 each.

Although the ship’s owners said the Titanic was unsinkable many problems before the first voyage were overlooked. Safety regulations at that time were not very strict. The ship only had 16 life boats, enough for about 1 500 passengers. It was only tested for a few hours and never went at full speed. The telegraph system on board was new and not many people knew how to operate it.

During the night of April 14, 1912 the waters of the North Atlantic had a temperature of about -2° C. At noon on that day the radio operators got messages from other ships about icebergs that were nearby. The Titanic’s captain, Edward Smith, did not care about these warnings. He was captain of a steel giant that could not sink. The only thing he cared about was setting up a new world speed record. The Titanic was to be the fastest ship that ever sailed from Southampton to New York.

The night was clear and the Titanic sped on. When a big iceberg was sighted the first officer shut down all the engines. But it would have taken the ship about half a mile to come to a full stop. Even though, on the surface, the ship stayed clear of the iceberg, it ripped a big hole in the hull.At once the compartments began to flood with cold, icy water. The bulkheads were lowered but it was too late. Water flooded at least five compartments

The collision with the iceberg was so slight that the passengers hardly heard it. Most of them didn’t take any notice and continued dancing and having fun. Some passengers were asleep in their cabins.

The bow of the ship dipped under the water’s surface and the back part of the ship began to rise. After a short time the Titanic broke into two pieces. When Captain Smith realized that the Titanic was sinking he had a distress signal sent out but the nearest ship was a hundred kilometres away.

Titanic bir gemiden çok yüzen bir otel gibiydi. 7.5 milyon dolara mal olmuştu ve üretilen hiçbir gemiye benzemiyordu. Lüks holler ve koridorlar palmiye ağaçları ve diğer pahalı bitkilerle donatılmıştı. Gemi 2 600 yolcu ve 900 mürettebat taşıyabiliyordu.

10 Nisan 1912de, geminin New York’a olan ilk yolculuğunda 2 200den fazla yolcu gemiye bindi. Çoğu, bu yolculuk için tüm parasını biriktirmiş göçmenlerdi. Birinci sınıf yolcuları özel bir oda ve banyo için 2 500 ila 4 500 dolar arası ödemek zorundaydılar, üçüncü sınıf yolcuları ise odaları paylaşıp adam başı 35 dolar ödediler.

Geminin sahipleri Titanic’in batmaz olduğunu söylemesine rağmen ilk yolculuktan önce pek çok problem gözden kaçtı. O zamanın güvenlik kuralları çok katı değildi. Gemi sadece birkaç saat test edildi ve hiç tam hızla gitmedi. Güvertedeki telgraf sistemi yeniydi ve pek çok insan nasıl kullanılacağını bilmiyordu.

14 Nisan 1912 gecesinde, Kuzey Atlantik suları 2 derece civarındaydı. O günün öğleninde radyo operatörleri diğer gemilerden yakınlardaki buzdağları hakkında mesajlar almışlardı. Titanic’in kaptanı Edward Smith bu uyarılara kulak asmadı. O, batamayacak çelik bir devin kaptanıydı. Umursadığı tek şey yeni bir dünya hız rekoru kırmaktı. Titanic Southampton’dan New York’a yelken açan en hızlı gemi olmalıydı.

Gece açıktı ve Titanic hızlandı. Büyük bir buzdağı göründüğünde birinci subay tüm motorları kapadı. Ama geminin tam olarak durması yarım mil sürüyordu. Gemi yüzeyde buzdağından uzak kalmış olmasına rağmen, gövdede büyük bir delik açılmıştı. Birden, kompartımanlar soğuk, buz gibi suyla dolmaya başladı. Ara bölmeler indirildi ama çok geçti. Su en azından beş kompartımana doldu.

Buz dağıyla çarpışma o kadar hafifti ki, yolcular nerdeyse duymadılar bile. Çoğu dikkate almadı ve dansetmeye ve eğlenmeye devam ettiler. Bazı yolcular kabinlerinde uykudalardı.

Geminin pruvası (ön kısmı) su yüzeyinin altına indi ve geminin arkası yükselmeye başladı. Kısa bir süre sonra Titanic iki parçaya bölündü. Kaptan Smith Titanic’in batmakta olduğunu fark edince bir imdat çağrısı gönderdi ama en yakın gemi kilometrelerce uzaktaydı.
